Who we are:
Following the 2023 referendum, Toowoomba residents who had campaigned for the Yes vote convened to share their reactions and consider future action. Approximately 30 members met again a few weeks later and resolved to continue as Toowoomba First Nations Allies. The group identified three areas for action: gaining and sharing knowledge relevant to First Nations, strengthening community relationships with local First Nations people and sustaining the group. The website’s tagline, ‘Listening, Learning, Connecting’, encapsulates these action areas.
What we do:
Each general meeting includes a ‘learning session’, typically lasting approximately 30 minutes. These sessions usually feature an invited First Nations presenter, although they are occasionally facilitated by a group member. Two book clubs were established shortly after TFNA’s formation to foster member relationships while facilitating learning. Other ‘educational’ activities have included film nights and group excursions to relevant sites. TFNA members participate in events that promote relationships with First Nations people, such as attending monthly Black Coffee gatherings, sponsoring an award for Inspirational Educator at the NAIDOC Week award dinner and presenting information stalls at the NAIDOC Expo and the Battle of Meewah commemoration. Monthly working bees assist with the maintenance of bush gardens at Gummingurru, a significant local First Nations site.
When we meet:
General meetings are held on the 3rd Saturday of each month from 10:30 am until noon in the offices of the Social Justice Commission.
