Who we are:
We are a reconciliation group in the Hobsons Bay City Council Area in Metropolitan Melbourne.
We are an incorporated association and registered with Reconciliation Victoria.
What we do:
We’ve taken our name from an event in 1856 when the local shire council, at their first meeting, agreed to remove a casuarina tree used by both Boonwurrung and settlers to meet and leave messages. Two members of the Shire spoke to retain the tree, recognising its importance to the Boowurrung who were being displaced. This is a shared history of some significance to local people in Hobsons Bay on which to build better understanding and truth telling.
The story has been submitted to Yoorrook Truth Telling in Victoria and is ongoing as the Council has erected an installation on the wrong site ignoring elders advice. The overriding of cultural authority by bureaucrats continues in modern council administrations.
