Who we are:
Benarrawa Community Development Association and the Benarrawa Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Solidarity Group
What we do:
Benarrawa CDA Benarrawa acknowledges the Yagarabul Peoples, the Traditional and Spiritual Custodians of Yagara (Yuggera) Country. “Benarrawa” is a Yagara name for the waters and lands of the, now named, Oxley Creek. Elders gave permission to use it upon incorporation in 1995. Benarrawa CDA is an incorporated not-for-profit community organisation that predominantly uses community development methodology in working with local people across southwest Brisbane to together create, develop and sustain positive initiatives which address issues of poverty, social and economic isolation and exclusion, loneliness, and general neighbourhood concerns.
The Benarrawa Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Solidarity Group is one of the core groups that exist under the umbrella of Benarrawa CDA, and the members extend an open invitation to people to join with us in these activities, working together, in collaboration in creating a more just, welcoming, inclusive and enduring community for all. The solidarity Group is comprised of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Elders, cultural workers, and community members as well as non-Indigenous members. We come together to work in partnership, to learn and grow together towards true justice. This group started in 1993 when people came together for Reconciliation Study Circles.
The Solidarity Group continues to learn from the Aboriginal and Torres Straits Islander Elders and cultural workers and seeks to inform its members and the wider community about important issues affecting the lives of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, and to promote justice and understanding between all peoples.
When we meet:
We meet monthly, on second Saturday of the month excluding December and January, at Benarrawa CDA premises.
