The map of Stolen Generations institutions is a powerful truth-telling and educational tool that sheds light on a deeply painful chapter in Australian history. It identifies the institutions, reserves, and missions where Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children were forcibly removed to, from the 1800s until the 1970s.
In every state and territory, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children were systematically removed from family, community, Country and culture, under policies deliberately aimed at erasing their identity.
This map was informed by feedback including Stolen Generations survivors, descendants, and organisations, as well as educators, researchers, and archivists.
The map aims to guide people on a journey to learn about the history of the Stolen Generations.
